‘The Lion King’ trailer is everything we could have hoped for

When your trailer gets 8,328,858 views in 12 hours, you probably know that you’re onto a winner. Last night, the almighty masters of tugging on heart strings, Disney, dropped our first taste of their live action remake of The Lion King, and simultaneously made the entire planet nostalgic for their youth.
They had to get this right and they did. Expectations were always going to be high, but when news first landed of the casting for the film this time last year – Donald Glover as Simba, Beyoncé as Nala, Seth Rogen as Pumbaa, James Earl Jones returning as Mufasa – the bar inched up just that little bit further. There was so much potential. Disney could not, at any cost, mess this up.
But, last night, as the sun raised over the Pride Lands of Africa and baby Simba, snuggled up in his father’s arms, turned to look at Rafiki, about to make his first public appearance as the new heir to the throne, the world let out a collective sigh of relief and, perhaps, maybe even a tear. Every note is pitch perfect, from the impeccable CGI to the great roar that closes the clip.
I’m often cautious of real-ish looking animals that talk in films. They tend to freak me out, but I think I can get over it for this, if only to hear Seth Rogen sing ‘Hakuna Matata’ (if the musical numbers have been left out of this remake, I’m out). When it comes out next summer, we’ll laugh and we’ll cry, but for now, let’s just get excited.
