A very important trailer has just leaked

There are few people for whom I’d be willing to sit through two minutes of wobbly phone footage of another screen, but if there’s anyone worthy of such a minor annoyance, it’s Donald Glover and Rihanna. I am, of course, talking about the leaked trailer for Guava Island, a new film that apparently stars the duo and looks to be set in Havana, which makes perfect sense, as the pair were photographed filming something there earlier this year.

The trailer dropped at Pharos festival in New Zealand, an event that Glover personally curated and for which attendees were banned from using their phones – a rule that clearly wasn’t enforced with too much rigour.

So, what’s there to get excited about? Well, a) the film stars Glover and Rihanna, obviously, b) it’s directed by Hiro Murai, the genius behind the music videos for ‘This Is America’, ‘Sober’, ‘Sweatpants’ and ‘3005’, and some of the best episodes of Atlanta, c) other cast members include Black Panther’s Letitia Wright and Game of Thrones’ Nonso Anozie, and d) it’s rumoured to be pegged to Glover’s last musical project under the moniker of Childish Gambino. To me, this is what you call a slam dunk.

True fans will squint through the crappy iPhone footage to watch the trailer (below), but for our visions’ sake, let’s hope Glover and Murai decide to drop the full version on YouTube soon. This is a moment that deserves to be seen in HD.
